چکیده

ALTERATIONS of RS-T segment and of the T waves of the electrocardiogram have been described as a consequence of hyperventilation.5' 13 This, however, is controversial, since such changes were not seen by other investigators,' provided hyperventilation was performed in such a manner that a marked increase of the sinus rate was avoided and the respiration was not so shallow and rapid as to cause anoxia. One of us observed a patient for several years who was subj ect to long paroxysms of auricular ectopic tachycardia. Hyperventilation in this patient was followed by a conspicuous reduction in the number of ectopic beats.'2 There are no other studies known to to us on the influence of hyperventilation on arrhythmias of various types. The present report deals with an investigation of the response of arrhythmias to hyperventilation. We do not propose to present a statistical analysis of the frequency of the changes since the series is too small; our report will be confined to the presentation of a few positive cases.

Can chronotropic incompetence predict life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias in patients with stable ischemic heart disease?

Background: Chronotropic incompetence has prognostic value of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in both patients with asymptomatic and symptomatic ischemic heart disease (IHD), regardless of traditional risk factors. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between chronotropic response during exercise test and the development of ventricular arrhythmias. Methods: 153 pati...

Prognostic importance of ventricular extrasystoles in acute myocardial infarction.

Ventricular arrhythmias were recorded in 233 patients in a prospective study of patients with acute myocardial infarction. In over 95% of patients antiarrhythmic therapy was not given until the onset of ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation, or persistent idioventricular rhythm. There was a mortality of 18% during the patients' stay in hospital. The most important features of ventr...

Arrhythmias in dilated cardiomyopathy.

Sixty-five patients with dilated cardiomyopathy underwent 24 hour electrocardiographic monitoring: 62 (95.4%) showed ventricular arrhythmias and 52 (80%) complex ventricular arrhythmias (multiform ventricular extrasystoles, paired ventricular extrasystoles and ventricular tachycardia). Complex ventricular arrhythmias correlated significantly with some haemodynamic indices of ventricular dysfunc...

Malignant auricular arrhythmia.

Abnormal foci in the auricles, from which the cardiac impulse may arise, beget various types of arrhythmia. Three main groups may be distinguished, namely, ectopic beats, auricular tachycardia (of slower or faster rate), and auricular fibrillation. Although the deranged auricular function is fundamentally similar in each variety, there are reasons for regarding the groups as separate nosologica...
